President, New Jersey Education Association (NJEA)

Joyce Powell is President of the 200,000 New Jersey Education Association and previously served as NJEA Vice President and Secretary-Treasurer. Powell began her teaching career in 1973 as a teacher of emotionally disturbed children at the Barse Elementary School in Vineland and spent the next seven years teaching in elementary schools throughout the district. Since 1980, Powell has taught computer math, English, vocational training, health, and inclusion U. S. History at Vineland High School South. She is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Glassboro State College (now Rowan University) and has continued her graduate studies at Rutgers University, Georgian Court College, and New Jersey City University. In 2007, she was named one of New Jersey's 100 Most Influential People by Politics NJ.
