International Supermodel, Entrepreneur, and AuthorBorn in Sudan, Alek Wek knew only a few years of peace with her family before they were caught up in a ruthless civil war that pitted outlaw militias, the Muslim-dominated government, and southern rebels against each other in a brutal conflict that killed nearly two million people. Discovered on the streets of London, this former refugee is now a top international supermodel who has graced the pages of the world's most glamorous fashion magazines and runways. In 2007, she released an autobiography entitled Alek, documenting her journey from a childhood of poverty in Sudan to the catwalks of Europe. She is a member of the U.S. Committee for Refugees' Advisory Council, and is helping to raise awareness about the situation in Sudan, as well as the plight of refugees worldwide.
